Toyota forklifts are designed to be fuel efficient. But that’s not all they’re designed for. Toyota lift trucks are powerful and reliable. But again, that’s not all they’re known for. In fact, Toyota designs and new forklift models regularly win praise and industry awards for environmental sustainability, low maintenance requirements, long life, power, safety, dependability, and smooth operation. Each component takes a high priority, and by employing the principle of Kaizen—constant, incremental improvement—the company takes each element to new levels with every passing year. This list includes one of our favorite features: ergonomics.
Forklifts and Ergonomics
Of course a high-quality forklift is safe, and the best models include stability monitoring systems to prevent tipping and overload. Toyota offers a patented System of Active Stability (SAS) that includes a sophisticated set of sensors in the base and mast that provide feedback on load balance. Corrective action takes place when the truck’s center of gravity moves out of position, which reduces tip-over risk and protects the operator from injury.
But some forms of safe operation go beyond accident protection and extend into the realm of musculoskeletal problems and repetitive stress disorders. Too often, forklift and heavy machinery operators spend the duration of an entire shift, day after day, locked in imperfect postures or reaching and twisting in ways that are physically unnatural.
Proper ergonomic design can also address the user’s visual field, which should be wide and clear to avoid squinting or craning, and it also should cover the position of gear shifts and steering controls. Fortunately, Toyota’s advanced design addresses every one of these areas. During a long shift, user motions in the cabin are easy and intuitive, and operators maintain complete control over the equipment, including steering and braking.
For seated, walking, or standing users, controls can be typically be customized, so a seat or headrest can easily be returned to its baseline adjustments for a specific user. Pushbutton controls on the steering mechanism also reduce unnecessary reaching. For even the simplest lifting devices, like walking pallet lifters, minimal strain is placed on the user. Toyota forklifts do the heavy lifting so your employees don’t have to. While they’re at it, they absorb the rough conditions of a busy workplace so your operators stay protected from danger, environmental stress, and harmful repetitive motions.
